Before the technician arrives, switch the pump off at its isolator to stop dry running, check the ground and roof tank levels, look for obvious leaks or tripped breakers, and note any sounds or error lights. Do not repeatedly restart a humming pump; that burns out motors. Use stored water sparingly from the roof tank.
1. Make it safe
Switch off the pump isolator. If there is water around the pump and electrics, turn off the breaker at the DB first.
2. Check the tanks
Is the ground tank empty? Then the problem may be the DEWA supply or the ground tank float valve. Is the roof tank empty with a full ground tank? Then the transfer pump is the issue. Full roof tank but no pressure? The booster pump.
3. Note the symptoms
Humming without starting (often a capacitor), clicking on and off (pressure switch or tank), loud grinding (bearings), leaking (seal). This helps the technician bring the right parts.
4. Use water wisely
Gravity from the roof tank often still supplies some fixtures. Prioritise drinking and toilets.
